Why Bother With the Toys?

| 28 January 2009

I know kids love toys. As a parent, I love giving my child toys, but I'm starting to wonder why we bother.

Since I have become aware of such things, I have noticed that children (my Libby included, or, rather, especially) would rather play with anything other than the toys we give them. For example, why do kids love the packaging more than the package? It seems kids finally get around to playing with the toys that were in the cardboard boxes only when the cardboard boxes are no longer able to be played with.

Recently, Lori and I sat Libby down to play and we laid out a nice assortment of toys for her to choose from. Her selection? The diaper bag.

Oh, not the diaper bag per se, but the smaller diaper bag that actually holds the diapers inside the larger diaper bag. So why is the larger bag called a diaper bag again? If the smaller bag that fits in the diaper bag is the bag that actually holds the diapers, then shouldn't that bag be called the diaper bag? That's another blog post altogether...

Here she is:

Also, at Christmas, we could never get Libby to move beyond the tissue paper inside the gift bags. She had much more fun rustling the tissue and tearing the wrapping paper than actually playing with the toys. Maybe next year we will just fill a cardboard box with a lot of tissue paper wrapped around another cardboard box. It would keep her entertained for hours.

But, Libby's favorite non-toy of all: the remote control.
