MySpace is Not My Space Anymore

| 03 April 2009

Well, it's official. I canceled my space on MySpace. Whew! I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Here's why I did it:

1. Spam. I'm tired of emails posing as friend requests that direct me to some spam blocker (of all things), virus protection or other hijacking defense when what I really need is defense from MySpace hackers. Not to mention the friend requests from the MySpace front pages directing traffic to "my other site."

2. Ads. If I wanted to watch videos, I would go to YouTube. My favorite ads are those for "Christian Singles in your area." I have never seen any of those women in church...

3. My Attention Span. I can't keep up with both MySpace and Facebook. And now with the pressure to tweet on Twitter, I don't think I can handle any more social networking.

4. It's So 2007. I was listening to Mike and Mike the other morning, and one of the emailers said Facebook was so 2008, and that Twitter was the latest and greatest thing. If Facebook is so 2008, what is MySpace. A week ago, these guys didn't even know what Twitter was, now you can join the 1000+ followers of Greeny & Golic's tweets.

5. Profile Pimping. It seemed like every time I would visit a friend's MySpace profile, the profile was different. The profiles were unrecognizable from one day to the next. One day I would come across a pleasant, soothing, silent profile, the next it was like a postmodern art exhibit (with surprisingly loud music). No, I think I prefer the whitespace on Facebook.

Now I have to track down all of those pesky (now dead) links I've scattered around to my MySpace profile.
